On Wednesday, AU Envoy Raila Odinga strongly criticized the enormous expenses of lawmakers traveling to the US this week.
The delegation included National Assembly Speakers and Senate Speakers, MPs, MCAs, clerks, and support employees.
Daily Nation reports disclosed that the precise price of the journey could not be determined, but there were signs that it could cost nearly Ksh100 million to taxpayers.
Through his spokesperson, Odinga said he “finds no justification whatsoever in parliamentary and county assemblies sending such a enormous delegation to a mission where a handful could return with a report.”
The former Prime Minister also pointed out that the US journey was evidence that “these institutions have money that they don’t know what to do with, or they just don’t care about the burden that taxpayers bear.” The trip comes at a moment when the administration of President Uhuru Kenyatta proposes cuts to overseas travel as part of austerity measures.
