Safaricom announced a free YouTube bundle for Eliud Kipchoge’s INEOS challenge on Saturday.

From 8am to 4pm, all Safaricom subscribers will be able to stream the Vienna race live on their phones at no cost.

“The bundle will be accessed by dialling *159# upon which a customer will receive a free YouTube bundle,” a statement from Safaricom reads.

CEO Michael Joseph also revealed that customers will be able to send free messages to express their support for the athlete.

During the race, Safaricom subscribers who send a text to the number 159 messages will have their messages displayed live on broadcast TV feeds.

Over the next seven days, the M-Pesa logo will also be rebranded as ‘Eliud 1:59’ to commemorate the challenge.

It is a privilege to partner with him on this historic occasion and as an icon, it is only befitting to offer our M-PESA brand in his recognition,” the CEO added.

Kipchoge’s partnership with Safaricom dates back to 2017 when the company launched its ‘Twaweza’ brand campaign.

It is then that the marathoner took the role of Safaricom brand ambassador.

On Saturday, Kipchoge will be attempting to become the first ever athlete to run a full marathon in under 2 hours.

This will be his second attempt after the one in Italy where he missed his goal by 26 seconds.
